Although
only opened in 1997, the Old Head of Kinsale Golf Links is
quite simply one of the most remarkable developments ever
conceived in the history of golf.
The
course, designed by a combination of Ireland's golfing heroes
and design experts, is set on an Atlantic promontory that
can hardly be rivalled in terms of drama and beauty. Rising
hundreds of feet above dramatic cliffs, and surrounded by
the Atlantic Ocean on all sides it commands the most spectacular
views from almost every part of the course. It is a national
monument and an ancient royal site, fortified by a castle
at the narrowest part of the promontory, with history traceable
back to several centuries before Christ.
Eight
of the holes play directly along the cliff tops, providing
an exhilarating test of golf and concentration for players
of all standards. On a mild day it is possible to shoot a
respectable score, but rest assured that the ever changing
Atlantic winds ensure that the course offers a different challenge
every day.
Golfers
will also be pleased to know that Kinsale is renowned as Ireland's
Gourmet capital where visitors can choose from a wide variety
of top class restaurants and hotels.
